Chanukah feasting

Oh chanukah - 8 days of everything centered around food! Hard time for me, but I'm hoping that the work I've been doing so far these last several months will keep me reminded that on the other side of those 8 days I will see the results of whatever I do....

Forum: Chanukah

I'm so glad to see this as a new forum. I've been wanting to share a new experience.

I finally joined a fitness center ( YVY Boro Park) and believe it or not- I'm hooked. (Sweet - this is for you - I really never understood how someone can be addicted to exercise. Not only do I understand it now - I'm addicted myself!)

More later - gotta run to the gym.

Forum: Fitness Center / Personal Trainers

Hi sweet and sportsmom - I've missed you ! I don't relate to PMS sugar cravings in particular, however in general it's a huge problem in my life. I'm so bad at keeping away from the first bite and I'm even worse with stopping.

Although Yom Tov is my favorite time of the year with the lack of routine and schedule I've been worse than ever!

HELP!

Forum: High Holidays

New Kugel Recipe

A friend of mine mentioned this kugel that's her family's favorite. I called her today for the recipe, tried it, finished off the whole thing (with the help of my two teenage daughters) and I decided to post it here immediately! I will put it in the Cook NooK too.

1 lb bag cut frozen green beans
1 lb bag stir fry vegetables
1 T lite mayonaise
1 whole egg
1 egg white
1 minced garlic (one clove fresh or one cube frozen)
salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Steam , boil or microwave the two bags of vegetables until tender. Combine with the rest of the ingredients. Pour into a 9x13 foil pan. Bake for 45 minutes.

Forum: Favorite Recipes

Oink! I Sinned!

I had been really 'good' since right after Chanukah. I shed 10 - 12 lbs. I was thrilled. In the interim I baked tons of goodies for Purim, never even tasting. I would ask my cleaning lady to tell me whether the cream was flavorful enough, the pasta dish salty and spicy enough, etc. I went totally cold turkey on forbidden foods. Lo and behold, Purim rolled around and I binged. I was sure right after Purim I'd be back on track, but then my daughter was hospitalized with pneumonia and hospitals are not very diet friendly. The Bikur Cholim room, laden with foods was starchy through and through; sandwiches and snacks were the order of the day. Well-meaning friends and various organizations sent me a woman's best friend - chocolate - and I allowed myself to be cuddled by it. How I craved some vegetables and fruits, but they were non-existent.
Now we are B'H home, the patient is still not back to school, and I have not yet gotten back on the diet track. I am still noshing forbidden foods. Unbelievably enough, the scale is not yet complaining too much.
How do I break the new cycle? It is so demoralizing.

Forum: Teshuvah and Inspiration During/After a Binge

Pesach is coming!

No, I don't want to know where anyone is up to or who's going to a 5 star hotel for Pesach. I need ideas on how to STICK to it this month. I've been doing so well since Sunday. Today I slipped a bit (on elbow macaroni - no pun intended) . Now since you might be thinking - omigosh - of all things is that what she craves?!? I'll supply the answer.

It was an empty-out-the-freezer dinner and everybody was hungry...I sauteed the once frozen elbows in homemade breadcrumbs with a little sugar. Now that's good! But the kids weren't used to it so nobody wanted to taste.....I had to convince them it was good....

As I said, it was a slip... I GOT UP and back to sipping tea .

Forum: Shavuos

Layered Mixes

Hi Everyone.

When I decided I wanted to give detailed instructions for a layered ball jar mix, I tinkered with different recipes and came across quite a few that I liked. I love to share cooking ideas, so instead of limiting myself to the narrow column of the newsletter I came to the community page where I can "spread my wings" and do a lot of sharing and hopefully get some feedback too!

Here'e my soup idea:

Heartiest Split Peas Soup Ever

1/2 cup barley
1/2 cup dried split peas
1/2 cup uncooked rice
1/2 cup dry lentils
2 tablespoons dried minced onion
2 tablespoons dried parsley
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon lemon pepper
2 tablespoons beef bouillon granules (opt)
1/2 cup whole wheat spirals or shells

Directions
In a wide mouth 1 quart jar, layer the barley, peas, rice and lentils. Then layer around the edges the onion, parsley, salt, lemon pepper, bouillon . Seal the jar.
Attach to Jar:
'Heartiest Split Peas Soup Ever"
Add contents of jar to 3 quarts of water, 2 stalks of chopped zucchini, 2 sliced carrots, 1 cup of shredded cabbage (optional) and 2 cups diced tomatoes. Over medium low heat, cover and simmer about 2 hours, or until vegetables are tender.

I'll post some more ideas as soon as this newsletter gets out...

Forum: Favorite Recipes

Maintenance

Losing weight was its own reward. Maintenance is much harder. There's no reward at the end of the week. No change in weight needed. So it's the same old same old. How does anyone out there deal with this? I know someone is going to say "I wish I was there" and Iam glad I lost theweight but maintenance is its own issue.

Forum: Kosher Finds
