Losing weight was its own reward. Maintenance is much harder. There's no reward at the end of the week. No change in weight needed. So it's the same old same old. How does anyone out there deal with this? I know someone is going to say "I wish I was there" and Iam glad I lost theweight but maintenance is its own issue.

Maintenance is difficult, and for me everyday is different. Hopefully, we've learned strategies to keep ourselves healthy and in control. Now, if I overeat, I forgive myself and compensate by eating less the next meal. It is definitely something that I have to always think about.......

I think you've come to the right place Eusta (please share the meaning of your name with us!!)...

We instinctively know how to handle life's toughest situations if we have people that UNDERSTAND around us. Who understands these issues better than us? Who can understand the feeling of "there was this great smorgasboard and I didn't even enjoy it..." or "how can I enjoy the Simchah if I have to fight food every minute"... These devlish whispers scream in our ears all the time.

Yes we do feel very accomplished ignoring them but who has the strength to fight all the time?!?

Welcome Eusta! Sounds like you have some experience behind you - we'd love to hear about it. And lovestoeat, you are absolutely right - support is so important. Many studies have indicated that people who have socialsupport around the issues of food do better than those who dont. I dont think I would be successful at all if I didnt have you - those people who "get" me and all of my food "mishigas"

yes - the only way we "get" each other is through this sharing. and that's the way we get through life...

Funny that when we are overeating we think that we are the only ones, andwe tend to isolate. When we share our experience, we realize that we are no so unique after all - it feelsso good to be understood, no?

I may be in "maintenance trouble.........." I have been eating non-stop since our
Bar Mitzvah last week. It is all the food that we took home as leftovers and there are massive amounts still in the freezer. I can tell that my weight is creeping up.
I've been tired all week from the "not so smart" eating, so I haven't exercised that much. Each day I've started out good and then by the end of the day, I am pulled toward the tempting goodies............ I know that a lot of us fall into this pattern.....
I'm just here whining about it..........

OK sportsmom: it's that old dilemma of the bad-for-you leftovers in the freezer, and who wants to throw out good food, etc.  If these leftovers can't be served to the family (and you can't resist eating too much yourself), just get rid of it.
Better to throw out the food than the "maintenance"....

Thanks Sweet for the good advice. So, here is a lesson that this situation has taught me......... Maintenance is just a word for "watching what we eat, and using exercise and activities other then eating" to feel healthy and have energy to live a meaningful life. I've cut back on eating the leftovers because it is like eating restaurant food that has extra fattening ingredients at every meal........

Whether we are trying to lose a lot or a little weight we are always trying not to gain more weight, so really, we are all in "maintenance" at some level. When I was at my highest weight, I had to stop eating full fat and sugary foods and cut down on restaurant meals and Shabbos and Yom tov feasting just to stop gaining. I didn't even try to lose at that point, but changing my habits and joining Startfresh and using all the good advice and tips gave me a new outlook. So now when I
gain 5-8-10 lbs.... I can rein myself back in.........

Lovetoeat, I'm so happy to see you back here...........

I threw away everything that was refrigerated that I felt "pressure" to eat a lot of before it spoiled. The frozen things I kept, but I can stay away from for a while. The problem is that where I live in Connecticut, there are no Kosher markets, etc. near by, so I feel like I have to horde my Kosher goodies.

We used up all the milchig treats for Shavuous and now I'm left with things like fleishig egg rolls, and other small meat things I can eventually use for side dishes. I just really hate to throw out food that is still good.

How have you been doing?
